概要 | Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev, a great Russian novelist of the 19th century, and Vladimir Vladimirovich Nabokov, a prominent Russian-born refugee writer of the 20th century, share one thing in common: they loved the game of chess and would write about it in books. Turgenev's most famous novel Fathers and Sons depicts the growing cultural schism between the generation of the 1840s, fathers, and that of the 1860s, sons. Bazarov is most often considered the central figure in the novel. He represents the typical "superfluous man," a peculiar concept in 19th-century Russian literature. It is remarkable that Turgenev used the word "chess" in a classical portrait of the novel to depict the intense intergenerational conflicts over the future of Russia. This article focuses on Fathers and Sons by Turgenev and The Luzhin Defense by Nabokov to study the influence that Turgenev had on Nabokov's writing style from the viewpoint of chess. |
